/ / Request: School Supplies School Supplies
I am writing to request your support for our efforts to get school supplies to Ninewa’s special-needs children. It would be great if you could send backpacks, notebooks, pens, and pencils that we can distribute to the elementary school-aged children in the area. Anything school-related that you can provide would go a long way.
There are four cities we are concerned with specifically: Tal Afar, Sinjar, Rabiyah, and Tal Abtah. In each of these cities there are two or three thousand special needs children that we would like to provide supplies to. I realize this may not be feasible (8,000 to 12,000 supplies is a lot to ask for), but anything you can provide would be helpful.
Also if anyone is interested in sponsoring an Iraqi child who is disabled, I would be more than happy to facilitate that relationship. |
I am a Civil Affairs Officer with the Ninewa Operations Command Transition Team (which is responsible for all of Ninewa province in northern Iraq). I have worked here for 3 months so far, and have had some great successes with our humanitarian aid drops within Mosul (where we are based). Our next drop will be to the Al Amel School (literally translates to the Hope School) in Southwest Mosul, which provides care to 60+ children who are either deaf or blind. This drop will provide some much needed relief and support to these children, who otherwise get neglected all too often.
Another reason we do these drops is because there is a direct correlation between who provides support to these neighborhoods and who the citizens look to for help. Logistically the Security Forces are not stocked well enough to provide support everywhere. These gaps, especially along the Syrian border, are quickly filled by terrorists. Terrorists simply provide supplies to these schools in order to facilitate their relationships with the parents and children. Through these relationships they are able to use children to help transport and house weapons. Worse, citizens simply won't tell us where the terrorists are because they are the ones providing their children with school supplies.
